On the presence of the Ponto-Caspian hydrozoan Cordylophora caspia (Pallas, 1771) in an Iberian estuary: highlights on the introduction vectors and invasion routes
Several non-native invertebrate and vertebrate species have been detected in the Guadiana Estuary (SW-Iberian Peninsula, Europe) during the 21st century. In June 2015, the non-native hydroid Cordylophora caspia (Pallas, 1771) was detected for the first time in this estuary, which motivated an assessment of its distribution during late Spring and Summer 2016. The main goals of this paper were to: i) report the presence of Cordylophora caspia and its distribution in the Guadiana Estuary, ii) record the substrates colonized, salinity, and water temperatures at locations where the species was detected, iii) evaluate possible introduction vectors and invasion routes; and iv) discuss the potential impacts and management options. Cordylophora caspia occupied a 25-km stretch of the estuary with salinities between 0.2 and 13.8 and occupied a variety of human-made substrates. Shipping was the most likely introduction vector of C. caspia, which might have originated from populations in the Atlantic Ocean or the Mediterranean Sea. Currently, the potential ecological impacts are likely low since the population size is small due to an apparent shortage of suitable habitat. Economic effects are minimal at present because there are no major industries along the basin extracting water from the estuary. An integrated ecohydrological approach-i.e. freshets released from dams to control the populations of Cnidaria-was proposed to minimize or mitigate the potential negative effects of this species in the Guadiana Estuary.Delta Stewardship Council; Delta Science Program [1167]; Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, Portugal) through the Jellyfisheries project [PTDC/MAR-BIO/0440/2014]; European Regional Development Fund (COMPETE program-Operational Competitiveness Programme); FCT [SFRH/BPD/108949/2015]; [UID/Multi/04326/2013]info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Essays on corporate governance
This dissertation presents four empirical essays on corporate governance. The first essay analyses Portuguese CEO’s earnings. It is found that firm specific factors accounts for the majority of the variance in total CEO pay, while firm performance accounts for less than 5%. It is also found that the CEO characteristics, board of directors’ structures, and shareholders features are related with the CEO pay. In the second essay, we analyse the relationship between company performance and governance characteristics allowing for CEO specific characteristics, such as education, age and tenure. The findings support the conclusion that firm performance relates positively to the CEO’s level of educational attainment. Other governance-specific characteristics also explain this relationship, namely, the presence of independent directors on the board and voting cap restrictions. The third essay empirically analyses whether gender diversity enhances boards of directors’ independence and efficiency. The empirical results support this hypothesis. Moreover, this essay finds that firms that are concerned with board independence and those in more complex environments are more likely to have gender-balanced boards. Finally, the fourth essay empirically analyses the association between the board of directors’ composition and a firm’s financing policies. It is theorised that a more independent and efficient board leads to a shift of financing choices from retained earnings to short-term debt, from short-term debt to long-term debt, and from long-term debt to external equity financing. The results obtained in this last study support this hypothesis.N/

Adoption state of artificial intelligence: a saas perspective
The following thesis will focus on the general topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The main
purpose of this work is to investigate how generally AI is being implemented and developed in
modern times. Artificial Intelligence is critical in the SaaS industry. The study aims to get an
overview of the state of adoption of Artificial Intelligence with particular attention to how it is
in the SaaS industry and what it may indicate for the future. The author compares secondary
data analysis with interviews of SaaS experts to better understand of how the SaaS industry
differentiates from the general market
Hedge Fund evaluation: mean variance vs performance ratios
JEL Classification: G11, G19Combining the Mean Variance Utility function with the overall metrics that evaluate
portfolios’ performance, this project aims to study the correlations of equal weighted
portfolios based on the top 10 hedge funds of the studied sample, that maximize the expected
utility of an investor and the performance measures; and to understand the overall results of
the correlations between those portfolios.
Hedge funds are instruments that can represent different strategies, and in order to have an
approximation to the different risk profiles, the correlations between the final ranks based on
the different risk aversion coefficients in the Mean Variance Utility Function were studied.
Constructing equal weighted portfolios with the top ten hedge funds that maximize the
different levels of risk aversion, as well as the different performance metrics, the correlation
between those portfolios will provide the final conclusion of the project.
These correlations proved that, since there are different types of investors that have different
preferences, the process of evaluation of the portfolios cannot have the same methodology.
Preferences should be taken in consideration, and there are metrics that are more correlated
to the objectives of the final investor, than others.
conclusão final do projeto.
On a class of nonlocal elliptic problems via Galerkin method
AbstractIn this paper we study existence and uniqueness of solutions to some cases of the following nonlocal elliptic problem: −Δu=(g(x,u))α(∫Ωf(x,u))β with zero Dirichlet boundary conditions on a bounded and smooth domain of RN and also when Ω=RN, where α and β are real constants
